Allow me to share with you a simple setup to address the issue with PPC’s SMS/text message tone continuing to play even after the message has been checked/read. I have only tested this on an ASUS P525 Pocket PC (WM5) and so far it worked well even with the full length audio that I’ve tried (5.58Mb, 4 min 25 sec WAV tone track!)

As a follow up to my January 3 blog entry, here is a script to deactivate the 5-minute synchronization feature of ActiveSync 4.5.0 build 5096. The zip archive contains CAB and setup launcher for easy installation plus a short TXT doc. The core file works by setting Cradled value to zero every minute. When nothing is cradled, no synchronization takes place (at least per personal observation). On its future release, I hope Microsoft will consider having an option in ActiveSync to set sync interval / frequency.

 
Nested Tasks (that’s Outlook Tasks, not a “task/app manager”). It (pretty much) replaces all the functionality of the built-in Tasks application. Not all the features are implemented yet - notably Search and Filter. It adds the ability to nest tasks under one another. It works entirely based on the properties of the built-in Tasks (so will sync with Exchange/Outlook) and requires no importing or messing around.

If you happen to have this version of ActiveSync, you’ll notice that it syncs every 5 minutes and there’s no option to disable it via the ActiveSync user interface. Others seem unhappy about it. I have no idea why it was made that way. What I’ll share with you on this blog entry is a very simple trick to temporarily address the 5-minute sync rule. So simple it involves only 1 registry entry!
